George Afriyie has been relieved of his post as the vice president of the Ghana Football Association, the federation has announced.
The decision was taken after an Executive Committee meeting.
Happyghana.com exclusively reported on April 10, 2018, that the nation’s football governing body president, Kwesi Nyantakyi is considering sacking Mr Afriyie from his role as his vice after the latter pronounced his intention to contest for the hot position in 2019 without informing his boss.
Afriyie and his boss first started having problems last year after reports went rife in the media that the Liberty Professionals director labeled Nyantakyi as ‘greedy man’ in the wake of the Black Stars double header friendly games against Mexico and USA.
Following the tension between the pair, the FA president was reported to be prepared to sack and replace Afriyie as the vice because he did not trust him, but the matter was resolved by some bigwigs at the FA and in Ghana football.
Nyantakyi has consistently stated that he will not seek for re-election in 2019 after assuming office in December 2005.
After learning of his boss’ intention to vacate the position when his tenure expires in 2019, Afriyie declared his aim to contest for the FA hot seat in 2019 during his 50th anniversary celebration at the Mensvic Hotel last month.
However, Executive Members of the country’s football governing body has called on the CAF 1st vice to consider contesting for the top post after George Afriyie declared his intention to contest for the Ghana FA presidency election in 2019.
On Friday, the Liberty Professionals director was relieved off his duty as the Chairman of the Black Stars and replaced with Tema Youth bankroller Wilfred Osei Palmer, where he will be assisted by the Greater Accra Regional Football Association Chairman, Eddie Doku.
Afriyie is believed to have fallen out with the top hierarchy of the Ghana FA following his decision to contest for the FA top post in 2019; however, insiders vehemently denied the claims and said the reshuffle of the management committees of the national teams was done weeks before the Afriyie’s ‘Mensvic Declaration’.
Report reaching Happyghana.com indicates that some of the the leading members of the association have reached their boiling point and have implored Nyankyi to remove Afriyie from his position as his vice.
According to the source, the Wa All Stars financier is pondering on who to occupy the would-become vacant seat, and names such as Wilfred Osei Palmer, Nana Bayin Eyison and Osei Tutu Agyemang, who is known in the football fraternity as ‘Kotoro’, has popped up as potential replacements.
Nyantakyi assumed the Ghana Football Association office in December 2005.
