Ghanaian football legend, Sam Johnson, has expressed deep concern over the lack of leadership within the current Black Stars squad.
As Ghana is on the brink of not securing qualification for the 2025 African Cup of Nations for the first time in over 20years, Sam Johnson pointed to a void in leadership as a major contributing factor to the team’s struggles.
“This Black Stars team lacks leadership; the team doesn’t have a captain. Being a Captain is not about wearing the armband, as a leader of a team there are many characteristics one should possess, he should have the ears of not only his team mates, but also the ears of the coach but unfortunately, I don’t see anyone in this team with that potential,” Johnson lamented in an interview on Happy Sports.
The former Hearts of Oak star emphasized that true leadership extends beyond mere symbolism. A leader, he argued, should possess qualities such as strong communication skills, tactical awareness, and the ability to inspire and motivate their teammates.
Black Stars coach, Otto Addo is expected to announce his squad for the upcoming qualifiers in the coming days as the Black Stars prepare for crucial qualifiers against Niger and Angola this month.
In Group F, the Black Stars in the ongoing 2025 AFCON Qualifiers have secured two points out of a possible twelve.
