Award-winning Ghanaian singer and song-writer, Gladstorm Kwabena Akwaboah Jnr, popularly known in music circles as Akwaboah, has opened up about the one problem that he has with some artistes when it comes to songwriting.
Y102.5FM’s host, NY DJ while co-hosting with DJ Advicer on the Ayekoo After-Dryve on Happy98.9FM as part of the activities for the Y-Unplugged, asked Akwaboah if writing songs for other artistes is a job that is worth the effort. The artiste replied in the affirmative, however, he was quick to add its demerit as well.
He said, “It pays but the problem is some of the artistes feel like they are very big so if I’m writing a song for them, they don’t see why they should pay. When I started, because I was very new to writing, I wrote songs for Becca, Efya, SP Kofi Sarpong and many others because I was only now coming”.
Akwaboah stated that when he first started, he was with the mindset that it was not wrong for big artistes to call on him to write them songs even if it was just for a little token but now that he has also become a big artiste, the other big artistes are not willing to pay and he finds that only the young and upcoming ones are willing to pay him to write songs for them.
According to him, it is from these young artistes that he is making himself some income but had it been left to the big artistes, he probably would be making nothing and this, he described as disheartening.
