Ghana midfielder Bernard Mensah unleashed a massive shockwave on Sunday, revealing his decision to quit the national team at the prime of his career.

The 26-year-old, who plays for Turkish side Besiktas and recently caught coronavirus while in the national team, said he was quitting the Black Stars ‘until further notice’.

His decision comes as a shock as there were no hints or obvious reasons for him to quit the Black Stars when his association with the national team could have boosted his career.

Mensah was not clear over when he would return to the national team or what triggered his decision to quit the Black Stars.

However, the player who is recognised in many quarters in Europe as a top talent says he wants to focus on playing for his club that is highly reagrded in Turkey.

“I have decided to take a break from the national team until further notice.  I want to concentrate on my career for now. Thanks to all Ghanaians for their support,” Mensah wrote on social media on Sunday.

Mensah returned to the Black Stars last month after a long absence after he was called for the matches against Mali and Qatar.

He was not named in the squad for this month’s back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sudan.

It is not known if he has been angered by the decision not ot recall him for the matches against the Nile Crocodiles.

He has been under pressure from Besiktas since he joined the club from Kayserispor as he is yet to live up to the standards expected by the Turkish giants partly because of his period of isolation after catching the coronavirus disease.

Mensah tested negative last week after self-isolating for a period of 10 days following the Black Stars camp in Turkey.

He contracted the virus after international duty with Black Stars last month.

Akonnor did not include him in his squad for this month’s crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sudan.

Mensah joined Besiktas on loan in the summer from Kayserispor and made eight appearances and scored a goal for Besiktas.
