West Texas A&M Track & Field kicked off 2025 with an electrifying weekend at the eighth annual Corky Classic, and Aziz Mohammed once again stole the spotlight.
The standout athlete claimed the biggest win of the day with the victory in the men’s mile with a time of 4:09.84, the eighth-fastest indoor mile in program history.
His effort helped the Buffs finish first in a dominant performance in the race, as Dennis Cheruiyot and his countryman William Amponsah finished third and fifth, respectively. This incredible start to 2025 builds on Mohammed’s stellar achievements from the previous year.
Aziz Mohammed had a stunning year in 2024, and no performance stands out more than his 3:58.56 in the mile at the Lone Star Indoor Championships, which set both the meet and school records.
The following season, he propelled WT’s 4x800m relay team to victory in the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships where they clinched a national title with a remarkable finish.
Mohammed also dominated the outdoor season, posting a personal best of 1:48.12 in the 800m at the Texas Relays, where he claimed first place against a competitive field of Division I athletes. At the Lone Star Outdoor Championships, he doubled in the 800m and 1500m, securing two gold medals and earning the title of Most Outstanding Male Athlete of the meet.
Now, with his victory at the Corky Classic, Mohammed has proven he’s ready to take his performances to even greater heights in 2025.
