The Black Queens of Ghana got off its campaign at the 11th edition of the Total African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) to a flying start by beating Les Fennecs of Algeria 1-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Black Queens started the game on a positive note, stringing passes together, restricted and pushed the Algerians high up the pitch.
Samira nearly produced the first goal of the game with a sweet strike but Kahina in post for Algeria was equal to task as she parried away the ball for a corner kick.
Right-back Gladys Amfobea opened the scoring for Ghana in the 12 minutes with delicious strike outside the 18-yard box of the Algerians.
Algeria had a spell of possession in the last 5 minutes but still couldn’t to break the defence of the Black Queens.
Five minutes into the second-half Ghana piled pressure and almost to add to their goal tally Portia Boakye scuffed his shot as the ball is cleared.
Algeria upped their game and nearly pulled parity through Habiba Sadou but her freekick was pushed away by Ghana’s Patricia Mantey.
Ghana pushed and probed searching for an assurance goal but didn’t happen as referee Lydia Tefesse blew her whistle to bring proceeding to a close.
The win take Ghana to the top of Group A with 3 points.
Mali go boot to boot with Cameroon in the next Group A fixture at 6:30Pm.
Ghana will play Mali on Tuesday Nov 20, 2018 at 3:30Pm at the same venue.
