Roads and Highways Minister Governs Kwame Agbodza has ordered the immediate closure of a major bridge on the Offin River, linking multiple communities in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.
The closure follows concerns over the bridge’s deteriorating condition, which poses a significant risk to motorists, particularly farmers who rely on it to transport their produce from Kotokuom and surrounding areas to urban markets.
According to concerned residents, the frequent use by heavy-duty trucks has contributed to the bridge’s weakened state.
Despite repeated pleas from local residents for repairs, their requests initially went unaddressed, however, a social media campaign by concerned citizens brought the critical situation to national attention.
President John Dramani Mahama responded promptly, directing Mr. Agbodza to visit the affected area and take swift action. Accompanied by engineers from the Ministry, the Minister announced that the bridge has been handed over to contractors who will begin repair works immediately.
“We are handing over the site to contractors today, and we hope that by Friday, they should be able to mobilize and start doing the necessary repairs”.
