At least 94 people reportedly killed in Nigeria by fuel tanker explosion

A fuel tanker which exploded has claimed the lives of at least 94 people in Northern Nigeria.

The tragic incident, according to reports occurred late Tuesday local time in Majiya, a village in Jigawa state.

Authorities in engagements with reporters revealed that the already crashed tanker exploded near locals who had gathered to retrieve fuel which leaked out of the tanker.

The driver lost control and the tanker somersaulted and spilled fuel into a drainage ditch,” Jigawa police spokesperson Shiisu Lawan Adam said. “As a result, residents rushed to scoop the fuel when the explosion happened.”

Reports indicate that the death toll may rise, as 50 people are currently in critical condition, battling severe injuries.
