The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has intervened and stopped the establishment of a lorry terminal at the Blue Light Arena in Adum following the recent fire outbreak that devastated the area.
A week ago, the Kumasi Traditional Council ordered the demolition of walls erected for the terminal.
However, a visit to the affected market area revealed that construction had continued, and the terminal was nearing completion despite the council’s directive.
Dr. Amoakohene noted that the new station emerging under the footbridge should not proceed.
He stated that, he had engaged the individual responsible for the project and instructed him to halt all activities.
He also indicated that the police and NADMO had been directed to ensure the area was cleared.
Despite the minister’s directive, sheds for the terminal have already been constructed, and tiling of the area is complete, suggesting that operations could commence soon.
The fire incident destroyed three buildings occupied by traders, along with several makeshift structures. Although the police have cordoned off the site, some individuals have attempted to return and occupy the space.
According to Dr. Amoakohene, the police have been tasked with preventing the return of traders until a structural integrity report on the damaged buildings is finalized.
He warned that the level of destruction poses a serious risk, and failure to act promptly could result in further incidents.
He further noted that a structural integrity test had been conducted, and the report was ready. Plans were in place to discuss the findings with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) on Thursday to secure approval for key recommendations outlined in the report.
In the meantime, traders have been urged to remain patient as they await the Asantehene’s decision on the land.
