Asante Kotoko management defends decision to reassign CK Akunnor

Deputy Accra Representative and Management member of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Nana Kwame Dankwa has jumped to the defence of management of Asante Kotoko to move head coach CK Akunnor, to the position of technical director.

According to him, per the terms in the contract, management of the Porcupine Warriors can reassign him to any position of their choice in the team when the need arrives.

In an interview on Happy FM’s Anopa Bosuo Sports with Ohene Brenya Bampoe, Nana Kwame said, “Per the contract, we have with CK Akunnor, we have the right to reassign him to a different role apart from coaching in the team. But as it stands now, he is still the head coach of the team.”

The former Black Stars captain is reported to have told Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM that he is no more the head coach of Kotoko. “I have been asked to step aside but to take over as technical director.”

This according to Nana Kwame is untrue. “We had a discussion with CK Akunnor about the new role we intend to give him. Initially, he objected but later came back saying he wants to make some consultations. CK even asked us to put all our proposals on paper for him.”

However, Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Databank Ghana, Kojo Addae-Mensah also expressed his disappointment at the management of Asante Kotoko for allegedly sacking their head coach, after he qualified the team to the 2019/2020 Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) Champions League.

Media reportage revealed that the Dr. Kwame Kyei administration asked CK Akunnor to step down and take up the position of technical director of the club which CK rejected.
