A High Court in Accra has granted various assets, including a UK residence, a four-bedroom house in Spintex, Accra, a fuelling station, and two vehicles to Gifty Gyan, the former spouse of Asamoah Gyan, the ex-Ghana captain, as part of their divorce settlement. Presided over by Judge Hafisata Ameleboba JA, the court also ordered a monthly maintenance fee of GHC 25,000 to Gifty.
This legal dispute arose when Asamoah Gyan sought divorce, questioned the paternity of their three children, and requested a DNA test. The DNA results confirmed the footballer’s biological relationship with all three children. The court’s judgment declared the 2013 marriage between Gifty Gyan and Asamoah Gyan, despite an earlier informal marriage in 2002 when Gifty was 17 years old, as valid. However, the court annulled the 2013 marriage through a decree of nullity.
The court recognized that the couple had been in an intimate relationship since 2003 and had two children before their formal marriage. Regarding Gifty Gyan’s significant contributions to the acquisition of Asamoah Gyan’s assets, the court acknowledged her caregiving responsibilities and living arrangements with the children during Asamoah Gyan’s career, entitling her to a portion of the assets.
Asamoah Gyan, Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals and the leading African scorer in World Cup history with six goals, retired from football in June.
