Ghanaian actor and movie director, Ken Fiati has urged the government to increase efforts in developing the skills of young creatives in Ghana.

In an interview with happyghana.com, Mr. Fiati emphasized that intentional efforts to develop the skills of emerging creatives will earn any government significant respect and attention from industry players in the creative arts sector. “Any government that wants to be taken seriously should take a critical look at that aspect of our craft,” he stated.

Mr. Fiati recommended scholarships and sponsored programs as key initiatives that governmental bodies can introduce to enhance the skills of potential industry players. These initiatives, he noted, would increase the level of mastery and professionalism in Ghanaian creative work. “Some people learn, and some people just have the gift. When they are given the opportunity to attend International workshops, it increases knowledge and helps us know what is best practiced.”

He added that involving Ghana in such training puts the country on the world map and opens up more opportunities to expand the creative industry’s prospects. “When we are involved, we will be rubbing shoulders with people across the world, knowing what is best practiced and creating our pieces in a way that is tailored to fit the original Ghanaian setting.”

“Many governments have made promises to us. We believe it’s possible, but until we see these things enacted and incorporated into the sector, we cannot believe them,” Mr. Fiati concluded.

In earlier reports, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Mahama, has promised several initiatives, including budgetary allocations for Creative Arts and Culture, Film Festivals, the establishment of a Film Village, and support for Drama and Theatre Arts, among others.
