Proponents of the Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the anti-gay bill, are staging a protest today, Tuesday, October 8 in Accra, to express frustration over the delays in the bill’s final approval.
The protest aims to push Ghana’s president to swiftly approve the anti-gay bill, which has been stalled since Parliament passed it on February 28.
The delay has been exacerbated by a Supreme Court ruling on July 17, which put judgments on anti-gay cases on hold until all related legal issues are resolved. This ruling has created a bottleneck, preventing the bill from moving forward, and the protesters are seeking the president’s immediate assent.
Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, has stressed that the Chief Justice has the authority to fast-track the resolution of the matter if she deems it necessary, hence the need for this protest.
