Ugandan striker Steven Mukwala continued his impressive run against Hearts of Oak, scoring a brace to lead Asante Kotoko to a convincing 2-0 victory in the Ghana Premier League’s Super Clash.
The win at Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday was crucial for Kotoko, who bounced back from a loss to Berekum Chelsea. Hearts of Oak also entered the match in defeat, having fallen to Aduana FC.
Kotoko wasted no time taking control. In the 9th minute, Mukwala displayed his strength by controlling a long pass, beating two defenders, and firing the ball past the goalkeeper. This early goal set the tone for the match.
Despite Hearts of Oak’s efforts to equalize, Prosper Ogum’s Kotoko remained determined. Mukwala wasn’t finished either, adding a second goal in stoppage time to seal the victory.
The win moved Kotoko up to ninth place in the league table, just five points away from a top-four finish with three matches remaining. Hearts of Oak, on the other hand, find themselves precariously close to the relegation zone in 14th place.
Mukwala’s two goals bring his tally against Hearts of Oak to four in just two games. Coach Ogum also extended his unbeaten record against Hearts of Oak in the Premier League with this victory.
The win highlights the importance of Mukwala to Kotoko. With 14 goals this season, he sits just one goal behind the league’s top scorer, Stephen Amankona of Berekum Chelsea.
