Akufo-Addo sacks National Sports Authority boss Dr Dodzie Numekevor over poor stadium pitches

President-Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has sacked the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Dr Dodzie Numekevor, from his role. In a statement sited by Happyghana.com, the decision takes immediate effect.

The Baba Yara Sports Stadium came under scrutiny after the Black Stars suffered a 1-0 loss to Angola during a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier match.

The poor state of the pitch prompted the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to withdraw its approval for the stadium to host further Black Stars matches.

CAF has since advised Ghana to secure alternative venues for upcoming home games, while also offering expert assistance to improve the quality of pitches across the country’s top stadiums.

In response, the Ministry of Youth and Sports instructed the Ghana Football Association to push for inspections of the Accra Sports Stadium and the Legon Sports Stadium.

However, before any formal inspections took place, the National Sports Authority ordered the closure of all major stadiums for renovation, seeking to meet CAF’s requirements for hosting Category 3 games.

The President’s decision to remove Dr. Numekevor is believed to have been influenced by these developments.

Dr. Numekevor had been serving as the interim Director General since February 26, following the departure of Professor Peter Twumasi, who held the position for six years.
