Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused the Minority of attempting to stage a coup against Speaker Alban Bagbin.

According to Afenyo-Markin, the Minority sought to prevent Bagbin from being re-elected as Speaker.

Speaking at the final sitting and dissolution of the 8th Parliament on Monday, January 6, 2024, he argued that despite the Speaker’s efforts in securing victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the December elections, certain NDC Members of Parliament have plotted against him.

“Even with all he did for you people you wanted to stage a Coup against him, some of you didn’t want him to come again. Mr Speaker it is true and if they dare me I will mention names, yes some of you didn’t want Mr. Speaker back of all that he did for you,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized that it was the Majority’s prayers that helped Bagbin retain his position. He also warned that if the Minority continued their actions, he would reveal the names of those MPs who opposed the Speaker’s re-election.
