The Ashanti Caucus in Parliament has voiced urgent concern over the repeated infernos in the Ashanti Region, particularly following today’s blaze affecting several shops in Adum, Kumasi.
The fire, which erupted in the Central Business District, left shop owners helpless as their businesses and investments were reduced to ashes.
Firefighters are still working to contain the rapidly spreading flames.
In a statement signed by its secretary, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the caucus condemned the frequency of such incidents and criticized the lack of effective measures to address them.
The group highlighted ongoing challenges faced by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), including inadequate sophisticated firefighting equipment, limited water supply infrastructure, and a shortage of personnel.
The caucus called on the Minister for the Interior to investigate the causes of these fires and to implement strategies to prevent future occurrences.
They also urged the government to prioritize equipping the GNFS with modern resources, emphasizing the Ashanti Region’s critical role as an economic hub.
The statement stressed the need for decisive action to protect lives, livelihoods, and investments in the region.
