A standoff is underway in the vicinity of the Achimota Police Station, as University of Ghana staff and local residents defy eviction notices served by a mysterious private contractor. The confrontation comes on the heels of a surprise demolition operation, carried out by alleged land guards in the early hours of Sunday morning, despite the presence of police officers. The demolished structures included homes and makeshift structures, leaving the affected individuals determined to resist further displacement.
Chairman of the University of Ghana Branch of TEWU, Benjamin Nkumsah has spoken out against the forced eviction of occupants near the Achimota Police Station, condemning the use of land guards and thugs to carry out the operation under police supervision. In an interview with the Media, Mr. Nkumsah highlighted the dubious legality and lack of transparency surrounding the eviction. He called for a halt to the eviction process and made a direct appeal to the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akufo Dampare, to intervene and safeguard the rights of the affected residents.
The individuals impacted by the sudden demolition are demanding not only a halt to the forced evictions but also transparency regarding the identity of the mysterious private contractor orchestrating the operation and the legal basis for the demolition.
