Ghanaian athlete Abigail Abugire, a freshman sensation competing for West Texas A&M University, has electrified the track and field scene, shattering the women’s 800-meter program record at the recent Red Raider Invitational with a blazing time of 2:07.19.
This surpasses the previous mark set by Raquel Chavez.
This outstanding performance earned Abugire the prestigious Lone Star Conference Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week award. She finished second in the event, narrowly trailing an NCAA Division I competitor, and her impressive time currently ranks her second in the nation among NCAA Division II athletes.
Abugire joins a distinguished list of West Texas A&M standouts, including Troy Whyte and Meadow Gallentine, who are excelling in their respective events.
This collective success highlights the university’s growing strength in track and field.
Abugire’s record-breaking achievement in her debut season is a testament to her exceptional talent and a promising indicator of future success.
As the season unfolds, she is poised to challenge both conference rivals and national contenders.
