The Ashanti Region Anti-Galamsey Task Force has seized six excavators involved in illegal mining activities along River Anum in the Bosome Freho District. During the operation, three foreign nationals, a Chinese, an Indian, and a Burkinabe were apprehended as part of the crackdown on illegal mining in five tributaries of the river.
This operation is part of the ongoing efforts by the Ashanti Regional Security Council to eliminate illegal mining, also known as galamsey, in the region.
The task force includes personnel from the Ghana Police Service, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Minerals Commission, and the Ghana Immigration Service.
The task force was established following the expiration of a two-week ultimatum issued by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene demanding that all illegal miners cease operations in forested areas and river bodies.
