COVID-19: Churches admonished not to take advantage of its members in these trying times

Outspoken radio personality and host of Happy98.9FM’s afternoon belt political show, ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ Kwame Afrifa-Mensah, has descended heavily on some churches for taking advantage of the fear and religious dependence of Ghanaians amidst the coronavirus fear.

During his usual rants before the show started, he charged the churches to rather support their congregation now that the virus is spreading and stop trying to still take money in the name of offertory and tithes though the President has banned gatherings including church meetings.

“From all the monies churches have been taking from Ghanaian Christians, now is the time for the churches to give back to their church members in trying times such as this,” he said.

Afrifa went on to describe some church leaders as desperate for still trying to take monies from their congregation by asking them to send their offerings electronically regardless of no physical church meetings.

Afrifa challenged these churches to reciprocate and provide some food items for their congregation instead of trying to take monies from them. “Churches now have to show love to their members by buying bags of rice and bottles of oil for them and also help do their part in fighting the coronavirus,” he made known.

He went on to commend the Church of Pentecost for its immense contribution towards the fight against the coronavirus in Ghana. “We must recommend the Church of Pentecost for giving out their cars freely to the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to educate Ghanaians on the coronavirus and also footing the bills for any and all expenses incurred during the exercise,” he said.

Government banned all public gatherings including conferences, workshops, funerals, festivals, political rallies, church activities, and other related events as part of measures to stop the spread of coronavirus in the country.
