The Ghana Education Service (GES) in partnership with the National Insurance Commission (NIC) has introduced insurance education at the second cycle level on the 17th of January, 2020 at the Tang Palace Hotel in Accra after three years of engagement between the two and other stakeholders.

Speaking at the launch of this initiative, the Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Dr. Kwabena Bempah Tandoh stated that the insurance education curriculum is one of the interventions targeted at students with the main aim of deepening financial literacy.

He noted that the insurance industry in Ghana is very promising as an “emerging middle class have helped to boost the sector’s assests, even as the World Bank forecasts the continuation of strong economic growth in 2020”.

He furthered that countries such as Norway, that have been able to integrate insurance education into their educational system have seen a high insurance penetration and an enhanced financial inclusion. He was thus confident that this initiative is the first step in boosting the general understanding of insurance.

“I am positive that this NIC-GES initiative…will effectively also serve as catalyst in shaping the career choices of students at second cycle level”, he added.

In his concluding statement, he assured that GES was committed to ensuring the effective implementation of this initiative in order to yield a great future for students in the pre-tertiary institutions.

Present at the launch of the insurance education curriculum was the Commissioner of Insurance, Mr. Justice Yaw Ofori.
