The Vice President of the Progressive Road Contractors Association of Ghana, Mr. Hammond Larbi has said that contractors are not to be blamed for the deplorable state of roads in the country.
He was speaking in an interview on Happy FM’s political and current affairs talk show, “Epa Hoa Daben”.
“I admit some of the contractors do shoddy jobs but contractors largely cannot be blamed for Ghana’s bad roads because you take inventories and submit to the ministry and they slash it telling you they lack adequate funds,” he said.
He attributed the problem to vehicles on the road, the materials provided for road construction and the attitude of Government officials to road construction.
“The system has allowed vehicles with increased axles onto the road. Secondly, we use gravel which unlike the former times asphalt was used in constructing the road. Finally, the Government tells you what to do and you cannot do otherwise”, he said.
He added that “every politician who comes to power brings their own contractors and that does not help the construction of roads”.
He, however, advised that the Government should invest into road construction by setting up road funds separately from funds used for other activities.
