A local government expert has commended the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the bold decision it has taken on barring Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), regional and constituency executives from contesting sitting Members of Parliament (MP) of the party.
The National Council of the party at a meeting last Tuesday took a decision to bar MMDCEs, regional chairmen, regional secretaries, regional treasurers, constituency executives from contesting their sitting MPs.
Mr. George Kyei Baffour said the decision is a laudable one that will go a long way to help the party foster unity among its supporters.
Mr. Baffour made this comment in an interaction with Kwame Afrifa-Mensah on the ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ show on Accra-based Happy FM.
He said the situation where some MMD CEs make money at the expense of the government and inject it into funding their political ambitions thereby undermining their sitting MPs will be a thing of the past.
He said the decision to make MMDCEs, regional and constituency executives resign three years before contesting any election in the party is commendable.
According to him, this will save the party from the unnecessary rivalry and acrimony that rears its ugly head during party primary.
He noted that the decision is long overdue but has come at the right time to ensure sanity in the party.
