The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has issued a press statement announcing the suspension of its planned demonstration against the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
The protest, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday, 25th February 2025, was intended to demand the release of withheld 2024 WASSCE results.
The statement said, the decision to suspend the demonstration follows an emergency meeting initiated by the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Prof. Ernest Kofi Davies. The meeting, which brought together WAEC officials, including Dr. (Mrs.) Rosemond Wilson, Head of WAEC Ghana, and Rev. Victor Brew, WAEC’s Head of Legal, as well as NUGS President Daniel Korley Botchway, resulted in firm assurances from WAEC that all pending withheld results would be released before 1st March 2025.
Additionally, NUGS disclosed that the GES Director-General has invited the union to submit policy proposals on reforms regarding the handling of examination malpractice cases. This, according to the statement, presents an opportunity for NUGS to advocate for a fairer and more transparent process that prioritizes students’ rights and ensures timely resolutions.
The statement further emphasized NUGS’ commitment to defending the interests of Ghanaian students, warning that if WAEC fails to meet the 28th February deadline, the union will take further action.
NUGS also called on students, parents, and stakeholders to remain calm while it continues to engage WAEC to ensure that their commitment is fulfilled.
