President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an immediate investigation into the violent clashes between illegal miners and military personnel stationed at the AngloGold Ashanti Mines.

The incident, which took place on Saturday, January 18, 2025, around 11:00 PM, involved approximately 60 illegal miners breaching the mine’s security fence in an attempt to access the Deep Decline area.

In a statement issued on January 19, President Mahama emphasized that anyone found to have acted unlawfully during the incident would be held accountable.

Expressing deep sorrow over the tragic loss of eight lives, the President extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. He also called for support for those affected, directing the management of AngloGold Ashanti to fully cover the medical expenses of the injured and facilitate burial arrangements for the deceased.

The President further tasked security agencies with restoring peace in the area and implementing measures to prevent future occurrences of such conflicts.
