The John Mahama-led government has established a 12-member committee to devise strategies and implement measures to address the looming power outages expected to impact Ghana.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama, confirmed to reporters after a closed-door meeting with stakeholders from the Institute for Energy Security (IES) that the committee is tasked with presenting a comprehensive roadmap by the end of the day.

According to Mr. Kwakye Ofosu, “The maintenance of energy systems, was originally scheduled for late 2024, but was delayed”

The committee, which includes prominent figures from Ghana’s energy sector, will be chaired by John Abdulai Jinapor, Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu Constituency.

Mr. Jinapor highlighted shortcomings by the previous administration, stating, “It needs to be stressed that the maintenance exercise should have been done by the previous government in October.” He further revealed that Ghana currently has fuel reserves sufficient for only five hours of power generation nationwide.

The government and stakeholders are expected to implement urgent measures to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
