The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the General Officer Commanding the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, Brigadier General Michael Opoku, of masterminding plans to rig the 2024 elections in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
At a press conference held on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at the party’s headquarters in Accra, NDC National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi claimed that their investigations revealed Brigadier General Opoku’s involvement in efforts to secure an electoral victory for the NPP.
Gyamfi alleged that Brigadier General Opoku played a key role in leading NPP-aligned forces, described as National Security operatives, who were involved in violent incidents during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election on January 21, 2019.
He further claimed that the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has tasked Brigadier General Opoku with devising strategies to manipulate the electoral process, particularly in the Ashanti Region. According to Gyamfi, these plans are set to begin with the Special Voting scheduled for December 2, 2024 and further to December 7.
Sammy Gyamfi called on the Inspector General of Police, George Akuffo Dampare, to remain vigilant and ensure that NPP operatives do not instigate violence or disrupt the December 2024 elections.
