President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is set to commission the Flower Pot Interchange today, Tuesday, November 19. The new flyover aims to alleviate traffic congestion between the northern and southern sections of the Tema Motorway. Once operational, it will streamline movement between areas such as Cantonments, Burma Camp, East Legon, Spintex, and Tema, significantly improving residents’ quality of life.
Key features of the project include an 802-meter dual carriageway viaduct with asphaltic concrete surfacing, a 140-meter ramp from Shiashie to the viaduct heading toward Airport Hills, and an 80-meter ramp from the viaduct to the Motorway toward Tema. Additionally, a new road passing through the old East Legon tunnel has been constructed, alongside a 200-meter road linking Cantonments to the Giffard Road Interchange.
The Flower Pot roundabout has been redesigned, and the project incorporates pedestrian walkways on both sides of the flyover, streetlights, road markings, traffic signals, and other road furniture.
Construction began on March 7, 2017, with China Railway No. 5 Engineering Gh. Ltd as the contractor and Deoke Consult Ltd serving as the consultant. The 93-month project was financed by Afrexim Bank and the Government of Ghana.
