The Aowin District Police Commander, Isaac Owusu Mensah has expressed frustration with the challenges of prosecuting illegal miners.
According to him, the delays from the Attorney General’s office in pursuing illegal mining cases has been a major hindrance.
Addressing residents of Jama during the community’s inaugural environmental stewardship day and launch of Jama anti-galamsey advocacy, DSP Owusu Mensah sighted that politicians and Chiefs exert influence to secure the release of illegal miners which is undermining their efforts in the fight against Galamsey.
“Couple of times, arrest will be made and whiles you are preparing your docket to prosecute the offenders, calls will come from authorities and before you realize there is an order for you to go on a different target”.
“In as much the police is fighting hard to eradicate the menace with all the evidence that we have to proceed to the law court, the state will tell you to seek the consent of the Attorney General and sometimes the Attorney General will even take over the case”, he lamented.
