The Majority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has lavished praise on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for its groundbreaking decision to select a Muslim, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as its flagbearer for the upcoming December polls.
Addressing a gathering of enthusiastic party supporters at the NPP’s headquarters in Accra on Monday, September 9, Afenyo-Markin emphasized that this historic move shatters the long-held stereotype that the NPP is a party exclusive to the Akan ethnic group and inaccessible to Muslims.
He noted that this perception has been perpetuated for years, with some individuals even tagging the NPP as a party that discriminates against Muslims and denies them leadership opportunities.
However, Afenyo-Markin asserted that the NPP has boldly broken this record, demonstrating that politics in Ghana knows no ethnic or religious boundaries. By choosing Dr. Bawumia as its flagbearer, the NPP has proven itself to be an inclusive party, willing to give opportunities to individuals regardless of their religious background.
He urged Muslim supporters to see Dr. Bawumia as a role model and a symbol of hope, and to rally behind him in the December polls. Afenyo-Markin believes that by voting massively for Dr. Bawumia, the NPP can make history again by electing a Muslim as President of Ghana, further solidifying the party’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity.
