The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a strong warning against any attempts to divert funds meant for drought victims in Northern Ghana to individuals aligned with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The government has requested GHS 500 million from the contingency fund to support affected farmers, pending approval from Parliament.
Speaking at a community durbar at Ayorya R/C Park in Kintampo South, Mr. Mahama emphasized the importance of distributing the relief funds fairly and impartially, regardless of political affiliations. He expressed concern that the NPP might misuse the funds, drawing comparisons to alleged mismanagement of COVID-19 relief funds.
Mr. Mahama urged the government to involve local chiefs in the distribution process to ensure transparency and accountability. He also remarked that the NPP has made life difficult for Ghanaians and attributed the lack of rainfall this year to their misfortune.
He stressed that Parliament has yet to approve the compensation for drought victims but made it clear that the NDC will not allow the funds to be misappropriated as they believe was done with the COVID-19 relief funds.
He insisted that the support must reach the intended beneficiaries and warned that the NDC will be watching closely. He reiterated the need for chiefs to be involved in the distribution process to maintain transparency.
