The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Federation of Senior Staff Associations of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the Trade Union Congress (TEWU-TUC) have announced the cancellation of their planned industrial action that was set to begin on August 9, 2024.

Initially the unions had intended to strike on August 9 due to the government’s failure to meet their demands.

However, a statement released on August 8 revealed that the strike has been called off following the government’s intervention to extend the upward adjustment in the Vehicle Maintenance Allowance (VMA) to their members.

The unions expressed appreciation for the government’s action, which they view as a positive step towards fairness and equity in line with their agreed conditions of service.

They commended the government’s commitment to addressing their concerns and acknowledged that the restoration of the VMA is a sign of willingness to resolve all outstanding issues.

Nonetheless, they urged the government to extend this adjustment to all categories of Senior Staff at Public Universities in Ghana, removing any eligibility restrictions. They argued that all members, regardless of rank, should benefit from this adjustment given their collective efforts in advancing public universities.

The unions assured their members that they will persist in engaging with the government and other stakeholders to address all remaining concerns affecting their working conditions.

They added that they are committed to working towards a better future for Public Universities in Ghana and appreciated their members’ understanding and cooperation.
