World Blood Donor Day: National Blood Service joins Global Celebration

The National Blood Service of Ghana (NBSG) has announced its participation in the global celebration of World Blood Donor Day on June 14, 2024.

The theme for this year’s celebration highlights appreciation to donors thus, “20 Years of Celebrating Giving; Thank You Blood Donors”.

The World Blood Donor Day is celebrated annually to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to also thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts.

In Ghana, the NBSG is dedicated to ensuring safe and sufficient blood supply for all patients in need, and this celebration is an opportunity to acknowledge the selfless contributions of donors across the country.

Commenting on this, Chief Executive Officer of the National Blood Service Ghana, Dr. Shirley Phyllis Owusu-Ofori, reiterated the importance of this day, stating, “World Blood Donor Day is a reminder of the incredible impact that blood donors have on the lives of patients.

Their generosity and commitment make a significant difference, and we are deeply grateful for their contributions.”

As part of the celebration, the NBSG will host a series of events and activities, including blood donation drives, educational seminars, and donor appreciation ceremonies.

These events aim to encourage more Ghanaians to become regular blood donors and to educate the public on the importance of blood donation.
“We urge all eligible individuals to donate blood regularly,” Dr. Owusu-Ofori continued. “Regular blood donation is crucial to maintaining adequate blood supply and ensuring that blood is available when it is needed most. Every donation counts and has the power to save lives.”

The essence of safe blood donation practices is to encourage donors to follow all health and safety guidelines. “Ensuring the safety of both donors and recipients is our top priority,” said Dr. Owusu-Ofori. “We are committed to providing a safe and comfortable environment for all who participate in our blood donation programs.”

In addition to the local events, the NBSG is collaborating with international organizations to promote World Blood Donor Day and to share best practices in blood donation and transfusion services.

This collaboration underscores the global nature of the effort to provide safe and sufficient blood supplies for all.
“On this World Blood Donor Day, we celebrate the heroes who donate blood and give the gift of life. We urge Ghanaians to join us in this noble cause and help ensure that every patient has access to the life-saving blood they need.” Dr. Owusu-Ofori concluded.

The National Blood Service of Ghana is dedicated to ensuring a safe and adequate supply of blood and blood products for all patients in need.

Through its various programs and initiatives, the NBSG works to promote voluntary blood donation and provide high-quality transfusion services across the country.
