Former Greater Accra Chairman of the NDC and Former Vice Chairman of GFA, Ade Coker, has stated that former President John Dramani Mahama’s proposal for a 24 hour economy is as clear as a bell.
According to him, the NDC flagbearer’s proposal for a 24 hour economy is very transparent yet people are adamant to understand it.
“It is very clear but they are refusing to understand it. I have told you that it will create employment, increase productivity it is going to enhance our life style.”
He strongly believes that some industries in the country if targeted can benefit from this 24 hour economy.
Speaking in an interview with Bismark Brown on Happy 98.9FM’s EpaHoaDaben show he said, “If there was no demand they’ll be no impulse fortunately, we have the demand so it is up to us to create an enabling environment for the people to use it. If I can go to the pharmacy at 2am I’ll go because I know the demand is there for me to go”.
“The same way, if I know that I’m producing some minerals or items and these same items are coming from Europe competing with us because we cannot meet the supply of those goods that is why it is coming from outside for us to purchase. So we have to create the demand” he said.
The former Greater Accra Chairman believes that if the facility and system are available, people will make good use of it.
“With the issue of unemployment, If you create an office or a pharmacy shop maybe in East Legon you’re going to employ one or two people and you’ve created employment. If there’s a security man working 24 hours people will come because someone will definitely be sick in the evening and they will want to buy medicine” he said.
Admitting that the service sector might not contain everyone and and most people might have to go into the manufacturing sector he added that, “this is why in this instance not all aspects of the economy will be 24hours. We will select specific sectors because it is tailored towards a specific program”.
He further indicated that although some sectors like the harbor, airport and ambulance services for instance already run 24 hours he argues that it runs in a limited version. He reiterated the 24 hour economy proposal by John Dramani Mahama will allow it run in to it’s maximum.
