Hearts of Oak legend Mohammed Polo didn’t mince words as he expressed his disappointment with Ghana’s performance in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) opener against Cape Verde.
In an interview on Happy FM’s Happy Sports with Nana Fosu Appiah, Polo remarked, “The coach (Chris Hughton) has a problem, tactically he has been very poor. When his tactics are not going right, he worsens it with his substitutions. That has been his major problem. Among all the elite teams, Ghana is the only one to have lost so far, which is very poor. Nigeria didn’t lose, neither did Cameroon, Egypt, Senegal, Ivory Coast, and the others.”
This critique comes on the heels of Cape Verde’s impressive 2-1 victory over Ghana, showcasing resilience and determination.
Despite a promising start for the Black Stars, Cape Verde took control, opening the scoring in the 17th minute with a goal from Jamiro Monteiro. Ghana fought back, with a disallowed thunderbolt strike from Majeed Ashimeru and a successful equalizer from defender Alexander Djiku.
With this defeat, the Black Stars face a tough challenge ahead as they prepare to take on the Pharaohs of Egypt on Thursday, January 18, in their quest for redemption in the AFCON tour
