Renowned Ghanaian football administrator and Lawyer, Ntow Fianko, has delved into the historic transition of the Ghana Premier League from an amateur structure to a professional League.
As the nation commemorates the 30th anniversary of the league’s inception, Lawyer Ntow Fianko shared insights into the pivotal moments that shaped the transformation.
The veteran administrator, who played a crucial role in the league’s evolution, attributed the initiative’s genesis to E.T Mensah, the Sports Minister at the time. Lawyer Ntow Fianko disclosed in an interview on Happy FM with Ohene Bampoe Brenya, “Football had reached a point where the incorporation of clubs was imperative. E.T Mensah spearheaded this vision, leading to the establishment of two committees tasked with initiating the necessary processes.”
The turning point came on the 3rd and 4th of November in 1993 during a Congress meeting, where the committees presented comprehensive reports outlining the advantages of incorporating football clubs. Lawyer Ntow Fianko reminisced, “We explained what the clubs stood to gain in return for embracing professionalism. It was during this historic event that we collectively decided to transition from an Amateur to a Professional League.”
