The Ghana Prisons Service has revealed that the feeding rate of each prison inmate in Ghana, 1.80ps per prisoner, is set for an imminent rise.
The Director General of The Ghana Prison’s Services Mr. Isaac Kofi Egyir at the Public Account Committee revealed that each prisoner is fed daily with this amount after being questioned by the Member of Parliament for Busila South, Hon. Clement Apaak concerning the matter. “The 1.80ps for each prisoner per day, and this has been the status quo since 2011.” he indicated.
Speaking to the chairman of the committee, James Klutse Avedzi, the Director General hinted that the rate was complimented by the produce that come from the prison service farms as support to governments efforts regarding feeding of the prisoners.
Hon. Avedzi who found this appalling, noted that the rate for feeding, would not be sufficient amidst the present state of the economy and was assured by the Deputy Minister of Interior Naana Eyiah that proceedings for an increase are underway.
