Lawyer Nkrabeah Effah Dartey, the Lead Counsel for alleged ‘galamsey’ Chinese national, Aisha Huang, has expressed dissatisfaction over his client’s public treatment and some unwarranted comments from Ghanaians.
According to him, he feels uncomfortable but not surprised by the perception and comments from Ghanaians over her client’s case as he labelled them as misleading and untrue.
In a recent interview with Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show, he disclosed that he has been attacked by some individuals for representing Aisha Huang.
“I don’t feel comfortable with the Ghanaians comments and perception about my client. The issues have become enormous, and people have taken the matter from various tangents, making all manner of comments. Some have gone to the extent of attacking me personally for being a lawyer for Aisha Huang. Unfortunately, these are the developments in a Democratic country like ours. I’m not surprised and for me I see this as a very simple criminal case of a Chinese national arrested in Ghana for involvement in mining operations,” he said.
Lawyer Effah Dartey reiterated that his client has already been condemned while the trial is still underway. He alleged that the actions, comments and perceptions emerging from the public have been informed by the narratives from the media.
“The law is very clear when arrest someone. Assemble the evidence, prosecute the evidence and if you are able to martial enough facts that can convince the court then the person will be convicted and sentenced accordingly. This is what the law provides and this is what the law expects to take place in Ghana. But in the case of Aisha Huang, it is as if we’re trailing her by the media. It is as if she has already been condemned and already seemingly an ex-convict. People call her ‘Galamsey Queen’, ‘Galamsey kingpin’ and so on and this is very disturbing,” he furthered.
Meanwhile, the Attorney General and the Minister for Justice, Godfrey Yeboah Dame is set to level fresh charges against Aisha Huang. The charges against her are in respect of her current offence as well as those she committed before her deportation from Ghana in 2018.
The Attorney General assured that he will initiate prosecution when he called for the case docket from the Police.
