Communication team member for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC),Alexander Ackuaku, has registered his displeasure at the commitment of Assembly leaders to the development of local assemblies in Ghana.
The 2020 NDC Parliamentary candidate for the Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro constituency stated that leaders in charge of local assemblies are barely involved in developmental works at the assembly level.
During an interview with Don Kwabena Prah on Happy98.9 FM’s “Epa Hoa Daben” socio-political talk show, Alex Ackuaku opined the reactive approach by such leaders hinder major activities of the central government.
“The majority of local assemblies in general have gone to sleep. The works that they were mandated to do to help the central government’s role in developing the country over the years have not been realized. They’ve become more of arm chair executives. They’re just there literally doing little or close to nothing. They only seem to operate when government throws in the common fund and if it delays, they just sit around there. That should not be the case,” he said.
With his locality as the reference, he believes some programs need to be initiated to help fund mobilization as business there are booming, rather than solely calling on government.
“Looking at companies currently springing up at Ngleshie Amanfrom, already established ones and buildings mounted in the locality, then I believe we need to question ourselves because I think this assembly shouldn’t have a problem. Bortianor-Ngleshie should not have problems with fund mobilization but the leaders there are rather waiting and over relying on government. It is an area I can say is a developing place so almost every day, new businesses are coming in. We need to capitalize on these things to gather the needed revenue in order to facilitate activities of the assembly,” he stressed.
