One of Ghana’s finest gospel music icons, Oware Sekyi popularly O J, could hardly hold his tears after he received overwhelming response from listeners of Happy FM following an appeal from Pastor Nyansa Boakwa that the music minister be supported while he was alive rather than after his demise.
The radio icon, who is host of Nsem Pii, made this appeal based on O.J’s latest album dubbed “Boafo y3 na” which literally means helpers are scarce.
“I got the inspiration for this music when my late father became sick and asked that I come to see him before he dies. I kept postponing my visit to one that would suit me but before I realized, he had passed on before I got to see him. That is the worst thing that I have done that it will take years before I get over it.” O.J told Happy FM.
“I did not know what information my father wanted to pass on to me before he passed on.” He bemoaned.
“On the day of his burial, family and friends were reading biographies and tributes about him and a word dropped in my spirit that, we should have said all these things before his demise. When men pass on, they don’t need our help again. It’s only when they are alive that they need us.Help me while I’m alive is the whole concept of my new album.” O.J recounted sadly.
Nyansa boakwa hosted OJ for 2 hours on Nsem Pii live on Happy 98.9 FM as part of preparation towards his album launch at the Liberty Assemblies of God church in Lapaz on Sunday.
According to Mr. Sekyi, Ghanaians have rejected our culture which is our heritage and have unconsciously copied blindly what is not ours.
He revealed that most of the creative things he does with words are from his background as a talking drummer and all the cultural activities he used to do during his school days.
Lots of people drove to the studio to donate in support of his ministry including taxi drivers and petty traders.
Pastor Nyansa Boakwa also donated his widow’s mite of five hundred Ghana cedis (Ghc 500) to the musician who broke down in tears saying he had never experienced a man giving him free airtime and topping it up money.
“I have been granting scores of interviews and after most of these interviews, most of the presenters will seek to collect money from me but I have seen that there are different people in every sphere of life.” O.J concluded.
