Business Development Consultant, Kwame Okyere Darko, says although government’s decision to reduce salaries of appointees between 20% and 30% is morally right, “it is significantly insignificant.
According to him, the sum of the pay cuts will barley bring any relief to the country’s economy, hence his comments.
“The move by the gov’t to cut salaries of gov’t appointees is morally right but significantly insignificant. What they’re doing now is a crossroad. We shouldn’t have gotten here in the first place if things were properly managed in the initial stage”.
‘…My question is, if they reduce their salaries how much will the total sum be? What relief will that bring to the country’s economy? The decision is morally right but is the reduction of salaries how we are going to save the economy and help the Ghanaian people?” he queried.
In an interview with Sefah-Danquah on Happy98.9FM’s Epa Hoa Daben political talk show, Kwame Okyere Darko stated that this is only an introductory move if government was honestly seeking solutions to Ghana’s economic woes.
Suggesting other alternatives government should consider, he stressed Government should take a re-look at its pro-poor initiatives as they are costing the country a lot of money. The One District One Factory (1D1F), One Village One Dam (1V1D), Planting for Food and Jobs and a lot of these pro-poor initiatives have seen to the late payment of salaries when we are not even seeing the results.”
The expert also charged government to recall, revise and reintroduce these policies if necessary.
The government could reduce the salaries of appointees by between 20% and 30%, Asaaseradio.com understands from reliable sources. The move is to protect social interventions such as the School Feeding Programme.
Salaries of ministers, heads of state enterprises as well as heads of municipal and district assemblies will all be affected. This comes after an associate professor in the political science department of the University of Ghana, Ransford Gyampo, wrote an open letter recently calling on President Nana Akufo-Addo to reduce the size of his government and slash appointees’ salaries by 30%.
