Three children have drowned in an abandoned sand winning pit at Tuba in the Ga South Municipality in the Greater Accra Region.
The victims are Elisha Adu 11, Samuel Adjei Mensah aka Tawiah, 7, and Isaac Amoah, 8.
The sad incident happened on Saturday, April 9, 2022.
According to mother of one of the victims, Kakra, accompanied his twin brother on an errand but upon returning, met a friend riding a bicycle and decided to follow him.
When the twin brother, Panyin returned, the mother asked him “to go call the twin brother” Kakra but came with the sad news.
Per an eyewitness account, the two friends with the bicycle met another friend and joined their play, however in the process, one got closer to the pit and fell in it.
In an attempt by the other two to rescue him, they also got trapped, leading to their death.
The homes of the victims were filled with sadness and sorrow.
Residents who spoke expressed concern about how sand-winning operations have impacted negatively on residents in the area.
They said several complaints to authorities have fallen on deaf ears.
Meanwhile, the police have transported the remains of the victims to the Police Hospital in Accra, awaiting autopsy.
