Ghanaian athlete Aziz Mohammed has set his sights on qualifying for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Speaking to Happy Sports‘ Ahashie Judeliver Eli , the rising star revealed his ambitious plans to represent Ghana in both the 1500m and 800m races.
Scaling New Heights: Aziz Mohammed’s Record-Breaking Performance
Aziz Mohammed has been in top form recently, breaking new ground at the West Texas A&M meet on April 21st, 2024. He clocked a blistering 3:44s in the 1500m, becoming the second-fastest runner in the school’s history.
Mohammed shattered his previous personal best of 3:50s, set earlier last month, with this impressive performance.
He acknowledged the hard work that lies ahead, stating, “I just need more competitions. Especially races with strong competition to push myself even further. I have conference and nationals coming up in a few weeks, so that’s my focus for now.”
Despite his significant improvement, Mohammed still needs to shave off some time to meet the Olympic qualifying standard of 3:33 in the 1500m. Also in the 800m, he would have to secure a time of 1:44s despite impressively achieving a personal time of 1:49s.
However, he remains optimistic, emphasizing, “The 2024 Paris Olympic Games: That is the main goal right now.”
Inspiring the Next Generation
Since arriving at West Texas A&M in 2023, Mohammed has been a beacon of inspiration for the university’s athletics program.
This young athlete’s journey is just beginning. His dedication and talent, combined with upcoming races, offer a promising outlook on his quest to qualify for the Paris Olympics and potentially make a lasting impact on Ghanaian athletics.
With his latest achievement, Mohammed has climbed to fourth place in the NCAA Division II rankings for the current season. Inspired by the legendary British runner Mo Farah, the Ghanaian athlete has several events ahead to secure his Olympic qualification berth.
