Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress, voiced apprehensions regarding the Electoral Commission’s preparedness for the upcoming 2024 polls.
His concerns arise amidst fears of apparent delays in the December 7 elections’ preparations.
Dr. Tanko-Computer in an interview emphasized that with only 8 months left until the elections, no schedule has been issued.
He stressed the importance of the calendar, stating that it outlines the specifics of the election schedule, including the procurement of electoral materials.
Dr. Tanko-Computer highlighted that ideally, the calendar should have been released as early as January to provide sufficient time for preparation by all stakeholders.
He expressed his concern, stating, “I must say this current EC appears not ready for the December 7 elections. As we speak now, we have 8 months to the general election, and this EC has no calendar.”
He emphasized the significance of the calendar, delineating essential activities leading up to December 7th, such as the commencement of the limited registration exercise and the procurement of electoral materials. Dr. Tanko-Computer underscored the necessity for transparency in the process, remarking, “There’s no calendar.”
Additionally, he called on the Electoral Commission to offer clarity on critical aspects like the registration process and nomination timelines, enabling proper organization among concerned stakeholders.
