Black Meteors coach Ibrahim Tanko, has opened up on Afena-Gyan saying he won’t hesitate to call him for the main tourney despite turning down a call-up for the final round of qualifiers.
Afena-Gyan, who was initially added to the squad for the Algerian trip last week refused to honor the invitation.
Industry watchers and football lovers alike per speculations, believe this decision was due to his snub to play at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
In a post-match interview, the ex-Black Stars assistant gaffer, Ibrahim Tanko stated he spoke to Afena-Gyan’s agent on three occasions but stated his client wasn’t ready but if he is on form he will invite him for the main tourney despite turning down the initial invite.
“We gave him an invitation but he didn’t come. I think it’s the FA that can speak as to why he decided not to come.”
“I spoke with his agent on four occasions but he kept telling us his player isn’t ready but when it gets to the main tournament and he is playing well, why not? I will call him.”
Meanwhile, the Ghana U23 team has secured qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
The Black Meteors beat Algeria 1-0 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi courtesy of a goal from Sporting Lisbon star Fatawu Issahaku.
The 2023 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations will be held from June 23 to July 8, 2023, in Morocco.
