Schalke 04 commenced their German Bundesliga campaign as they were defeated 2-1 by VfL Wolfsburg at the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday.
The Royal Blues began the match on a stuttering note after US international John Brooks handed the hosts the lead in the 33rd minute.
Domenico Tedesco’s charges thought they had secured a point from the game after Algerian midfielder Nabil Bentalib scored from 12 yards to level the score line in the 85th minute.
But Wolfsburg won the maximum points through Daniel Ginczek’s last-gasp strike.
In the aftermath of the match, Baba Rahman who started the match due to injury to new recruit Hamza Mendyl, was given a low rating after his positional error allowed Ginczek to tuck home the late winner.
Rahman will hope to bounce back when Schalke host Hertha Berlin on matchday 2 of the Bundesliga on Sunday.
