The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has resolved not to contest the Buem and Akatsi South by- elections due in the Volta Region in February.

According to the National Executive Committee of the party, there were doubts about how the 2012 elections were conducted and incidentally the conduct of polls in the Buem and Akatsi South constituencies’ forms part of the basis of the party's concerns.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has fixed February 5 and 26 for the Akatsi South and Buem by-election respectively.

The Buem Seat became vacant after the death of the MP-elect, Ford Henry Kamel, whiles the Akatsi South seat became vacant when its MP, Doe Adjaho was elected as Speaker of Parliament.

In an interview with Citi News the General Secretary of the NPP Mr. Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, stated that they have raised serious doubts about how the elections were conducted.

He said that the NPP is not in a position to participate in any election conducted by the EC as they have already filed a petition against the Commission over the last elections it run.

“You cannot approbate and reprobate at the same time” he said.

He also indicated that “having submitted a petition to the Supreme Court for the malpractices that characterized the election, it will be inconsistent on our part to participate in the process whiles the matter is in the Supreme Court.”

“So it is clear that for the principal of it, we will not participate in any such election” he added.
